Because I'm eventually going to need to beef up this 28 spline 8.8. So why not beef it up now instead of spending alot of time changing the bearing. I also don't know how badly damaged this 8.8 housing is. I'd consider spending a shiitton of money chaning out the rear instead of replacing the cheap bearing for the same reason I bought a full disc conversion/rims/lca/supposedly good rearend/a bunch of other stuff when all I needed to do was change the rear brake shoes... b/c I can.

Well since im not dead set on the 9 yet, one of the considerations was if the brakes would fit on it. But doesn't Strange and even Moser make these rears as complete bolt ins, so they'd have the proper axle flanges welded on. Or am I missing something?

I did have alot of fun getting the discs to fit on my chevelle's dana 60 though. I had to use 1 of 2 of the new brake brackets from the disc conversion as well as the bracket that held the floating axles in place that I got from Strange. I had do quite a bit of grinding on each one to make them basically fit inside each other. One to hold the caliper and one to hold the axle in place. You can always count on customizing when dealing with after market parts.

just build a 31 spline rear... its SO much easier

but in the mean time... just fix the rear you have and build up a 31 spline rear slowly.

thats how I did mine, and I have 31 spline mosers, 3.73 gears, and a detroit locker

whole thing cost me $675

Well, let's stop posting in two threads, lol.

So if I can't use C clip elims with the cobra brakes... What's the capacity of an 8.8 without them? I have no prob just grabbing a 31 spline posi carrier and axles... and then I guess a new set of gears B/C I have no idea what condition the gears that mine are in are. Who knows how long the guy that had this rear before me drove these with a bad pinion bushing, despite him saying about 500 miles.

But, if there's a lower hp capacity with c clips, then don't I need to go to a 9? And again, whats the restriction of cobra brakes with a 9?

I'm not running them in my car, and the 580rwhp 4v cobra that my old tuner built wasnt running them either!

So what are the chances that my axle housing is damaged? And rebuilding it won't damage the new parts/half fix the problem.

Extremely low. Bearings fail, and axles break, as well as diff parts, but the housings rarely fail unless you're making insane amounts of power.
