you should use a timing light remove the pip conecter little plastic thing by the distributor and set it to 13 deg. adv. however what you discribe sounds like you may have bad cap rotor plugs wires ,mabey dist. or coil its hard to say wich of the parts is bad i can only guess without seeing the car

Stock heads?

With a Vic Jr and a mechanical 700 on a very mild 302, it's gonna be more sensitive to minor carburetor problems. If the timing is correct then you might need to make jet and/or accelerator pump changes to the carb.

Alright this car is being weird as hell, when i first got the car, it smoked a little from unburned fuel, my dad played with the timing a little bit and the smoke went away, started the car up yesterday, and i couldnt even stand behind it, it smelled like nothing but fuel, smoking again, and my eyes couldnt stand being anywhere near the car, is this a carb problem?

I think you and dad need to seek the help of a pro. You may not even having a timing problem. Sounds more like the power valve in the carb took a dump. On older Holley carbs one good backfire could wipe out the power valve. I think you guys are in over your head. I can't stress it enough that if you are going to work on your car read up on the component(s) you are dealing with and educate yourself on how it works. Once you understand how something works you can repair it. Until then you will just be throwing parts at your problem and costing yourself more and more problems. Go to Barns and Noble and buy a book on Holley Carbs and study it.
