yeah, you don't really need it to get the codes like these guys are talking about.
It is nice to have a book with directions though.
Also, I glanced over the link and didn't see anything about the wiggle test. That test is one of the great advantages over GM diagnostics.

all you need is a paper clip to use as a jumper. the diagram shows you how to use the jumper to make the check engine light flash the codes. Its simple.

it allows you to find a bad connection by the tester beeping when you shake sensors and what not under the hood. (i guess it could help find a vacuum leak too)

I was having cold start issues with my car but, no code was showing up for the ect sensor. I ran the wiggle test to find it had a bad connection. I put some contact grease on the sensor plug and it was fixed.
