yeah, you don't really need it to get the codes like these guys are talking about.

It is nice to have a book with directions though.
Also, I glanced over the link and didn't see anything about the wiggle test. That test is one of the great advantages over GM diagnostics.

thanks alot im going to try this when i get home, a fellow member pmed me the same info thanks, i just figured if the code reader was cheap might as well get one to save me time counting lights but ima try it the manual way

it allows you to find a bad connection by the tester beeping when you shake sensors and what not under the hood. (i guess it could help find a vacuum leak too)

I was having cold start issues with my car but, no code was showing up for the ect sensor. I ran the wiggle test to find it had a bad connection. I put some contact grease on the sensor plug and it was fixed.
