Actually 94/95 was the last year of the 5.0 in the stangs.

In those two last years they only put 215hp to the flywheel so it doesn't surprise me that the car felt like it "struggling"

Anways, did it sputter, miss, or was just plain slow?

if it's really a 96-99 (weird range, btw) then it had an engine swap.

well im not to surewhat year it is.. but i do know that it's not a "fox body" it may be a 97 - 98 mustang body .... with a 5.0 so yes i believe it is a engine swap.. its just slow.. and takes a while to pick up speed...

Could still be a 94/95 and not be a fox body, and those came with 5.0s and yes in stock automatic form they are sleds.
