5.0 intake, turned 180* / head swap

hey all, I just got a 95 jeep wrangler YJ with a ford 5.0. my problem is there was a snorkel put on the jeep with the stock 4.0 I6 where the intake was drivers side. with the new motor the intake is pass side. someone told me i could turn the intake 180*... does anyone know anymore information about this?

my second question is this thing runs on premium with 10.5:1 compression. what heads should i swap out in order to drop the compression to 87 or 89 octane gas and of coarse lose the least amount of HP, or more importantly Torque. it has ford racing ceramic coated headers on it that i want to keep, so the exhaust ports need to be the same. it has GT40P heads.

here is a list of the mods he wrote down with the jeep.

Mustang Roller 5.0 block bored .030 over
10.5 to 1 compression
GT40P Heads
Explorer Intake
B303 Cam with upgraded valve springs (per Ford Racing)
Stock Crank/Rods
BBK 65 MM throttle body
70MM Mass Air Sensor
24lb injectors
12" x 6" open element Cone Air Filter
TJ Gas Tank and Walbro 255lph Fuel Pump
Ford Racing Headers-Ceramic Coated
Custom Single 2.5" exhaust with new Cat and Flowmaster 50 Muffler
Stock Distributer/TFI coil
Accel Coil
Griffon Aluminum Radiator

sorry if these are dumb questions, Im not trying to get flamed here, Im just new to the Ford world. I was brought up on small block chevy's. ;)

what pistons does it have?? if they are stock 5.0 pistons it shouldn't have 10.5 to 1 compression.

its been overbored .030"

OP, try to find a set of GT-40 heads, or a set of aftermarket aluminum heads with 64cc chambers. this should drop you down to about 9.8:1 compression.

There are some 5.0 engines with the throttle body on the driver's side (lincoln town cars and the like, i believe). I am not sure if it has something to do with the reverse rotation of the Mustang 5.0 or not, or if you can just bolt one of those intakes to your motor. But this might me something to find out.

you could always route a tube over to the drivers side. it may not look pretty but it could work. OR mount the snorkel on the pass side and weld a piece of sheet metal over the hole in the fender lol. what kinda condition is the jeep in?

kj kyle 06-01-2009 01:41 AM

jeeps in really good condition, plus i dont want all that body work, and snorkels are curved, so it will only fit on one side correctly. he told me the pistons were flat tops with valve releif. if worse comes to worse i may just get some dish pistons.

my real issue is figuring out this manifold. i talked to another guy and he said the intake manifold can go either way i just need differant brackets for the throttle cable. i just wish someone could verify this, and tell me a vehicle that has driver side intake. Ill look into that lincoln.

do you have any pictures of the jeep

PJC Racing 06-01-2009 05:11 PM

Yes, you can flip the upper plenum over to the other side on a stock 5.0 intake.

kj kyle 06-01-2009 06:17 PM

if you want pictures ill post them up later this week.

is the throttle body bracket all i need for the swap? and new gaskets of coarse.

PJC Racing 06-01-2009 06:24 PM

You will have to fabricate a bracket to work with the mustang TB and your cable (I would try flipping it upside down) or you could get a throttle body for a 5.0L LTD (Crown Vic) or Grand Marquis
