Default Matching Numbers - Originality question

How can you tell if a Fox Body Mustang has the original engine engine/drivetrain? Looking at a 1990 5.0 LX Convertible. Seller represents car as 84k original miles with an engine rebuild by previous owner. No paperwork. Car does run great. I wanna know how to tell if the original motor is still in it and don't know how. Thanks in advance. Chris.

looks and the block if it is painted will often indicate a swap out, other than that it'll hav e a e7 casting on the block = standard

That's part of why I asked. The engine still looks like a neat install. If it was pulled someone did a real good job of putting it back in.

So Ford still doesn't VIN stamp or anything like that? Based on what you told me it wouldf make sense to me I could pull any 5.0 from a Mustang and corectly re install it and noone would ever know. Am i way off here? Does that e a e7 apply to 1990 Mustangs only? What does it decode to? Thanks.

I thought all engines, trannys, and rear ends were stamped or had a serial number that should match the car?

in all honesty a motor swap wouldn't effect the value of that model much if any. if it were a 1968 R code mustang then yeah, but an LX convertible is the most sought after mustang out there

There are partial Vin numbers (last 8 digits) stamped on the block behind the intake and on the transmission that I know of.

This is my Vin Tag that is riveted to the dash with all the numbers and digits.

And here are the last 8 digits stamped on the block.
