1991-5.0

I'm looking to buy a 1991 mustang with a 5.0 out of a '84 mustang it is an automatic. the issues are that when i drove it, it wouldn't shift out of first gear past 35 mph. then the owner took it down the road and i heard a backfire and when he came back he said after the first backfire it shifted fine, and the tranny fluid was low so he put gear oil in and I'm going back tomorrow to drive it around a little before i buy it to see if it shifts fine and doesn't backfire when it does, is this a common problem with 4cyl swaps to 5.0 or is it something to do with the transmission and how hard is it to fix? i thought it backfired because it dropped rpm's so quickly from first to second, and the flywheel and torque converter are new.

I am right outside Augusta in Martinez, the car is in Dearing, he wants $1000, the car was low on gas that was apparently 8 months old if that makes a difference, but the shift issue is really my biggest concern
