Question Why do I change the timing?

Im in the process of replacing my starter and fuel filter and I wanted to know what increasing the time from 10* to 14* on the distributor does? Will this affect the performance of the motor or hurt it? I know this is a stupid question but you can never be to cautious with protecting such a healthy motor at just 76,000 miles on the clock and especially during these times with the economy!

It should give you a few horsepower, but you'll have to run 93 octane or you may get preignition.

Don't mean to bust your bubble but unless you put in a new motor or personally know the previous owner(s), a 1987 Mustang more than likely would have 176,000 miles on the clock. A 22 year old car would have had to be driven less than 3500 miles per year to have 76,000.

IS it okay to run premium with the timing set at 14 or it has to be 93?
