My tip would be if you've never done one before, take it somewhere to have it done, or have somone experienced help you. If you've done it before, you probably wouldn't be asking this question. The tools required are not your everday tools. At minimum you will need a dial indicator, a dial/digital caliper or micrometer to measure shims, bearing puller(s), a set up pinion bearing (or an old pinion bearing with the center ground out bigger), inch pound torque wrench, a good (strong) impact gun and/or breaker bar with a cheater pipe, and the ability to read the gear pattern after applying marking compound and make appropriate adjustments. Some will say just bolt the ring gear on the diff, and use the same shim that's on the stock pinion, and some get lucky, but that's not the correct way to install them.

Well thats cool if you have him helping, but, like pro said, that guy up there hit it to a tee. ive rebuilt a few rearends in school, and when i worked for ford.. i wouldnt really consider it "straight foward", because it definitely can be ****ed up if you dont know exactly what youre doing. Plus, like mentioned, you need the proper tools so you can shim it right.
