Whos running underdrive pulleys??
Hey guys, i have been doing some research on underdrive pulleys. I have a few questions though, all companies are claiming that charging and coolant rates will not be affected by installing their pulleys, Unless you have a high amp stereo system. Are any of you guys that are running underdrives noticing any problems? My car has the mach 460 will i have any charging problems? My driving is also split between 35% city 65% highway incase that affects anything. Im looking at the MARCH PERFORMANCE kit for my car (1995 GT 5.0) it is more expensive but i have a nice coupon from summit that will bring it down to a reasonable price. Plus i like the idea of having to not polish them, etc. So if anyone can drop their 2 cents id appriciatie it. Id like to do something new to my car but dont wanna waste my money or coupon. Thanks again, Jay.

180K on a Stock alternator, Stock water pump, Stock radiator and I say stock because they came form the factory and I haven't had to replace them yet and not a very big stereo system, and I've been running the March Performance Power and Amp series UD for the past 8 yrs and I've not a problem with them.
Just my $.02 |
i run UDPs. i have no problem.

I run UDP too. I have a 1200 watt amp and I haven't had any problems. Plus I'm in South Florida where it goes from hot to hotter and I haven't had any cooling problems. I run a 180* stat.

I saw that on the jegs site; you can have either the "power and amp" series or the "high water flow" series. On summit there is only one part number and one set. Is there a way to distinguish which one is which? The part number on summit is is 2110 in case anyone knows. Also do i still retain the stock belt? Is it as straight forward install as it looks, or do i need a pulley remover? Just undo the bolts old pulleys come off and new ones go on, do the alternator with an impact gun while its still on the car?

Is March the best quality? Thats primerilly what im looking for is the parts that are the best quality, so if March isnt it im open to suggestions.

I run them, far as the sound system, I have issues at low idle ie; at the traffic light, but that's because I run an electric fan and sound system, that's on the 130 3g conversion.

well i know my car is equiped with an electric fan.....what about the install is it pretty straight forward? i have an air rachet wrench but its a basic one. I dont have a strap wrench though so im wondering how i can get it back to tourque once its replaced. Are the water pump and crank pulleys pretty straight forward loosen bolts and pull off? is the crank pulley anyway attached to the harmonic balancer?

I'm running the March set, and I don't know how many of you actually have a voltage gauge rather than an ammeter, but the system will discharge off the battery at idle, especially with an electric fan. Typical pulley ratio from crank to alt is 3:1, and the March set is just under 2:1(unless they're running a smaller pulley now). I'm running a Powermaster alternator that's 100A at idle and 160A at highway speed, with their overdrive pulley(~2.35:1 pulley ratio), and it does ok if it idles at around 800rpm, but anything under that with the fan and another heavy load(lights, heater etc) it will discharge slightly. The voltage setting on the regulator is 14.8v, but with the fan on it runs at around 13.5-14, with the fan and lights/heater it drops to about 12.5-13v which is pulling off the battery territory.

Yes the are easy to install and you still use the same belt. The crank pulley is smaller and the alt/WP ones are larger. You shouldn't have a problem.
