I was recently given an 88 mustang gt from my dad but it was sitting for a year and now won't run and I'm having trouble figuring out the problem. It tries to crank just fine but won't start withoutt starter fluid and even when it does start it just wants to die. So first thing I thought it wasn't getting gas but I can hear the fuel pump running and i replaced the fuel filter and nothing changed. My next thought was that one of the catalytic converters could be bad but I have different people telling me it could be just the spark plugs or even a timing chain.

Any suggestions?

check fuel pressure with a gauge not by audible senses.......it could also be bad gas if fuel pressure test comes out fine
