Sorry for being dumb but what do you mean by using the exhaust as an extension? What cam would you recommend?

BTW I have to be able to pass smog with this car if it matters.

Use the exhaust to process the most A/F in the cylinders effectively. This does not mean an aggressive cam in the lope dept., just the correct valve events to optimize performance while ensuring emissions compliance. Is it possible?... in most cases, you'd be surprised.
