i have an 89 gt, its the auto. It shifts just before the orange line starts. but thats not even close to where the redline is. would it run a better time if i held it in gear until the redline? whats the difference between the redline and the orange line?

Leave it in drive and let it shift itself. If you do the 1-D-1 shuffle the over drive band will wear right out.

alright, and what if i just put it in first from the start and hold it there past the orange; to the redline? would that make it run quicker than letting it shift at the orange?

I doubt that engine makes much power past 4,500rpm, and there's probably no point in shifting it past 5k.

Here's a relatively stock 5.0 power curve. The torque drops off but the power is consistent. These runs go up to 5300 rpm.

My thoughts too. Make a few pulls down the track and keep an eye on the tach, you'll feel where it stops pulling.
