Default loud sqeeling noise then -dead Help plz

Hey guys thanks for looking first of all . Secondly this is the story. Its was quite warm outside and i went out to crank up my car she started fine and i backed down my driveway and all of the sudden somthing started squeeling almost like the sound of a high pressure fuel pump but about 4 times as loud.

i got out of the car and popped open the hood and went to see if i could figure out what was making the noise and the moment i popped the hood the car shut off and now this is the scenario.

absolutely no power,
the battery was dying before but i cotinured to use it .
so i put a brand new battery into the car and now when i put the negative onto the battery it arches and pretty much shoots off metal peices.

the car is a
1989 ford mustang lx
battery is now brand new 650 cc
new plugs and wires.

my ideas :
1. starter went and melted the solinoid causing a ground in the car. - but i dont know alot about cars so idk
2. no idea.
3. plz help

thanks for all your help

marcus

unhook the elec connections from the alt and see if issue goes away...if not unhook the wire going down to the starter and see if the arcing stops, if so the starter may have gone bad and stayed engauged in the flywheel causing the squeal you heard

all valid points above, but it could go as far as the ignition tumbler itself is becoming loose internally and the slightest bump caused it to engage the solenoid, thus triggering the starter, then etc etc

backtrace all the electrical components from the starter backward and find out if they're good.

well i unplugged the altenator and the arching still prosists but it started raining where i live so i coudlnt check the starter.

also another probelm i was having before she died was the electrical inside the car was going haywire. Sometimes the inside lights/raido/ anything else that was electrical was constantly not working and i would have to push on the top of my steering column to get it to come back on . I dont know if that could have had anything to do it but just some more information. i plan on replaceing the starter and solinoid since i knocked the altenator out of the equation .

check the ignition switch on the top of the column, pull the connector and inspect it for burnt/melted pin connectors
