Exclamation ***HELP!!! problems with 302 oil shafts twisting!!!***

I have a 89 gt with a 302. small top end mods including windsor heads, fo-mo-sport x cam, diff intake and proform carb. nothing major. but for some reason ive went through 4 oil shafts. the first two had twisted and caused the oil pump to stop therefore losing oil pressure, after the 2 i went with an ARP oil shaft and a highvolume moroso oil pump... and still yet ive had 2 MORE to twist and stop the oil pump. i need help bad!!

Are you using the same pump? Something isn't right, other than the shaft. There's got to be an issue with the pump binding.

you don't need a HV pump, get it out of there and use a standard volume pump and a new hardned shaft, there is a prob with your pump

are you using the same pickup for you pump every time? is it possible its clogged? or sitting too close to the oil pan causing it to over work the pump?

HV pumps are fine, but not always needed(good for higher rpm applications with looser bearing clearances). Being high volume isn't what's causing the shafts to break though, especially ARP shafts. But yeah, if you've been reusing the same pump the problem is most likely something int he pump itself.

Edit: I was wondering perhaps if there might be a pickup issue also. Crap in the pan around a pickup that's too low...the pump is trying to pull against major resistance. Definitely find out what the problem is though.

^^^like I said get the hv pump out of there, there is a prob with it, if pick up were clogged you'd know it, it would show up on the gauge as low pressure as well as in sufficient volume, since the op didn't mention such we can only assume pressure was fine???

Something is coming apart in the engine and causing the pump to lock up.Put a new pump and pick up in it,Clean the pan out.Check the valve springs and the oil seals if you have P.C. teflon. Make sure the pump shaft can move about .040 up and down when the pump is installed.Pick up to close to the pan, only creates loss of oil pressure, will not cause it to break shaft.Measure the depth of the pan near where the pick up is, then measure from the pan rail on the block to pick up,there should be at least 3/8" clearance.I usally measure without gasket just for a little saftey margin.

If it's happened with 3 different pumps, then you have a problem somewhere that's causing it. Solve that problem or you're going to keep twisting shafts.
