I've been struggling with the heat too... I never considered that my engine compartment heat could be higher due to my headers.

I've been thinking about trying some kind of heat shielding, but I don't want to spend the time and money on that right now. The heat in the engine compartment worries me though. Tried to start it on a hot night the other day after it'd been idling for a while, and the starter wouldn't crank. I think it was due to engine compartment heat... I put the hood up for about 15 minutes to let things cool down then tried it again, no problem.

I'm worried that the heat might bug my starter solenoid or motor, and maybe reduce the life of my new alternator... I've got a triple core aluminum radiator in there that keeps engine temp down, but of course all that heat just gets blown back in over it

Yea heat soak can screw up electronics. This is one reason MSD also says to mount their boxes away from direct heat sources. Get a Heat shield wrap for you starter if you are worried about that.

I've got some 1 5/8" headers on my car. Will wrapping those in insulation help out with engine compartment heat much as is suggested earlier in this thread?

^^yes it will. ceramic or wrapped will significantly reduce radiating heat in the engine bay and direct it more downwards to the downtubes, from there the air rushing under the car will take it away from the engine bay.

+1 to the heat shield. i just bought a couple years ago the summit starter blanket. its just like that flame suit stuff and it has a velcro thingy on it. keeps the starter kool. however if you are already havign issues on hot crank, could be ICM, starter, or the wiring itself. you may want to inverstigate that. just the heat in the enginebay should not make it do that on its own, there is something already wrong, just the heat is making it worse.
