Default Manual Trans Issue

Folks, I need some manual trans expertise. I have an 87 5.0 5-speed mustang. I drove it to work this morning and right before I got into a parking spot, I heard a noise and the clutch pedal went straight to the floor. I am thinking clutch cable broke but after inspecting the connection at the fork and the connection at the pedal, all looks fine. The pedal feels like the load is off of it like no cable at all. I noticed a squeaky sound that would go away once I pushed in the clutch pedal slightly, like 1/16" down... Please help me out. Thanks, rob

Yea sounds like your cable broke somewhere in the line. Does the shift fork have plenty of pressure on it?

Most likely the cable, but the noise thing is throwing me off a bit. You say you hear a noise, and a slight press on the pedal makes the noise go away. This indicates a throw-out bearing problem, and makes the notion that the cable snapped almost impossible....

Slight chance the bearing exploded or the fork bent.

I started up the car in gear and the car definatley moves. The nosie that I heard was before this incident happened. I did have another thing weird happen before this incident happend was that the car would not come out of fourth gear. I shut the car off and strated driving it again in fourth and it finally released from fourth. I will have to inspect the cable and pressure on the fork.

look under the dash to see if the cable is hooked onto the quadrant above the clutch pedal

or better yet take 10 min to get the cable out and inspect it. worst case is your fork fell off the ball.

I think the clutch quadrant broke. In the 87's it is plastic. Happened to me and the symptoms sound like that's what it may be.

How is that working out for you? I have one at the house waiting to be installed when I get home on leave.
