Because the belt is wrapping around the WP pulley different than stock, causing it to spin the other way. The belt is now going over the top of the WP from the alternator. Like these: http://forums.corral.net/forums/show...rnator+bracket
The only way your pump will spin reverse is if the belt does NOT cross from one side of the water pump pulley to the opposite side of the crank pulley.

Unless your alternator and power steering pump are both on the same side of the block, your pump is going the right way, regardless of your belt routing.
The only way your pump will spin reverse is if the belt does NOT cross from one side of the water pump pulley to the opposite side of the crank pulley.
