I have an 89 GT that has about 56000 mi on it and i replaced the clutch about 8-900 mile ago. Recently i cant shift into reverse when the car is running and 3rd and 4th gear both grind when i shift into them, yet run fine when in gear. I tried adjust the clutch but no such luck =( please help

Good chance of cable problems, but since you had 55k on it and needed a clutch, I'd say you maybe aren't that good at driving standard and burned up this one already.

Grinding gears can be caused by 3 things:
1. Worn out syncros.
2. Clutch cable too loose and not fully disengaging the clutch plate from the flywheel.
3. Bad pilot bearing. If the trans input shaft is not able to freely rotate in the hole where the pilot bearing is, the engine will keep the input shaft spinning at engine rpm and make it too hard for the sycros to do their job.

Replacing the pilot bearing is part of doing a coorect clutch replacement. You DID replace it while you were in there........right?

yes i did and a new clutch cable and throwout bearings and clutch fork, which after i finished i then brought to my uncles shop to have checked out and everything was all good the clutch cable was just right however it is adjustable and it may have loosened but i checked it and it has not moved... I'm thinking its the syncros the person that owned the car before me beat it =( anybody know a price to replace? thanks capri =)

If it is the brass rings like in the pic below, under a 100 dollars for all of them and the rest of the re-build kit

If it is the teeth on attached to the gear, a lot more becaue the gear has to be replaced

you can click the pic to enlarge

This is your best reply so far.

1. His problem is also in reverse. Probably not synchro then. Mostly likely 2 or 3.

2. Easy to recognize a loose cable. Clutch will start to engage right off the carpet.

3. Harder to diagnois this one but if you jam it into a forward gear while stopped, then quickly go for reverse and it goes in. Then it may be the pilot bearing or clutch disc dragging.

An easy way to tell if your clutch disc is fully disengaging. While stopped, clutch pedal to the floor, shifter in nuetral. After at least 5 seconds try to engage reverse. If it goes in without grinding, then your disc is disengaged.

This only works on non synchronized reverse, which your 89 is.
