i had a similar problem and no matter the size, overtime the belt would stretch and rub on itself.
after snapping a belt in traffic i got the march alternator bracket which basicaly removes the tensioner and brackets.

i did the same thing i ended up having to go with a 67 for the simple fact so i hear if you have one underdrive pulley it throws off the whole thing and i bought the car from a friend so i didnt exactly know if it had one but just use a string it seems to be the easiest

HAHAHAh i rember that. the belt was eating itself. u proly had the belt on wrong hahahah
