Diagnose my ignition problem!
to cut a long story short, i've changed out the pick up coil in my dizzy and that did wonders for my car.
however, just recently the car (during hot temps) will start to stutter, buck, etc... at a light and die out. It will eventually catch again and keep moving, different from before i changed the pick up coil where it just died until it cooled down. my question is, once a TFI module over heats, is it no good anymore? If not the TFI module, then what is causing this? temp gauge shows normal temps. |
when the module overheats it acts exactly the same as the pickup you replaced. wont work until cooled again. sounds like you may need to replace it as well.

Im just wondering if my TFI module is no good, too. I replaced it before changing the pickup coil, so im wanting to know if i should just buy a new module too. seems like i just keep wasting money on these modules and the problem keeps coming back. |
TTT.
anyone have a familiar issue? Summary : TFI module has been replaced in the past. bucking, stuttering and shut off inevitably returned. Recently I put in a new pickup coil, helping the previous problem a LOT. Now when the car is hot, i will give it load and the rpms won't climb then it proceeds to shutoff. I let it sit for a few seconds, crank it and it catches again and i can move. is my problem related to an OLD tfi module with a new pickup coil?? or will a new module give out anway? any advice is appreciated |
Could be the TFI or coil, too. Carry a volt meter around with you, and go recreate the problem. When it happens, go Ohm the two terminals on the coil. anything below 0.3 and above 1.0 ohms, coil is shot.
Then do the module. http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Flats/3349/test.gif Terminals to jump Resistance (OHMS) D1 to H1 12.8K D1 to H2 17.4K D1 to H3 1000 D1 to H4 11.5K D1 to H5 4.2K D1 to H6 0.0K D2 to H1 1.2K D2 to H2 5.8K D2 to H3 12.6K D2 to H4 100 D2 to H5 15.8K D2 to H6 11.6K D3 to H1 100 D3 to H2 4.7K D3 to H3 13.7K D3 to H4 1200 D3 to H5 16.9K D3 to H6 12.7K D1 to D2 11.5K D1 to D3 12.6K D2 to D3 1100 D1 to BASE 0.0K D2 to BASE 12K D3 to BASE 13.1K |
hmm, never thought of the coil. it is stock and old looking. i'll give that a shot, but recreating the problem is always a hassle. haha. stuck in the middle of the street with a volt meter in hand. wouldnt be surprised if someone just raged on me because of that
