Default 89 gt wont start when hot

i just bought a 89 gt. the guy i bought it from found it sitting a barn for the last 4 years. He put a msd distributor and new plugs and wires on it. when the car is cold it will start up fine but once it gets hot when i shut it off it wont start back up. then i let it sit for 10 15 minutes it will start back up. i have no idea where to start looking for the problem so any help would be greatly appreciated

When you say it won't start. Do you mean it cranks and doesn't fire or it doesn't crank?

That's weird.I wonder if the EGR valve is sticking on yah. Tap it very lightly and try to fire the car up. I had and 83 T-bird with a 302 in it that this used to happen to.

I would be sure that it is getting the fuel pump to come on. Turn everything off like the radio, door beeper, etc and turn the key on. You should hear the fuel pump. If you don't it could be the fuel pump relay which is located under your drivers front seat. I had a '89 GT that acted like yours and that's what it was. Apparently the relay would heat up and not re-energize until it cooled down.

Now if the fuel pump comes on the next step would be to check the spark. You can pull a plug wire and see if spark jumps to the block when the engine is cranked. Hold the plug connector about 1/8" from metal - you may need a screw or bolt stuck in the connector to get out of the insulator. If no spark then the module in the distributor would be suspect.

If you have fuel and spark it should start.

i would try replacing the module on the distributor. my 88gt would start fine when cold, but it would stall and not start back up when hot. you would have to wait 15 mins or so.

Default My 89 GT doing same - won't start when hot

Will run like a top all over town, but then it won't start again until it cools down. It cranks and cranks, just never catches. Starts great after another hour or so. Battery/starter good and replaced coil. Still has same problem. Can fuel pump relay be easily replaced?
