Cam Selection
hey guys. doing some engine work on my pony and need a little advice. looking to do h/c/i swap. engine is pretty much taken down to the block, but kinda stuck on what kind of parts to use. my mustang is a 93 5.0 auto, rebuilt with shift kit. 3.73 Ford racing gears, driveshaft, sub frames. i already know the heads and intake im going to use. ill be using GT40X heads and an u/l cobra intake, but now the big question is what cam? i was thinking of going with an E-cam to match the heads and intake, but some of my friends are suggesting otherwise. one of my buddies suggested i go with a lunati cam, another friend tells me to go with COMP cams custom grind cam, and im not really sure what to do. im not in a huge hurry to get the pony on the road, but im not thrilled to see it sit at the same time. any help is greatly apreciated.

well, the E cam is a good cam, yes, but its outdated. Much better off the shelf cams are available, but the best option overall is a custom grind to match what your plans are, RPM range, trans, etc etc.

that sounds alot like ive heard from other people about the alphabet cams. so i guess your suggesting comp cam for my selection? im pretty much open for any cam that will work well. im not looking for crazy HP gains, but i want a setup with some umph behind the pedal.

if you want real performance stay away from 169.00 dolla' performance......www.flowtechinduction.com or www.camshaftinnovations.com I'm on my second custom cam and will never go back to ots cams, try it and you'll know why

My car makes real performance. And it all started with an el-cheapo Trickflow cam. Could I make more performance with a custom cam? No Doubt. But when there's a budget, $160 sounds much better than $300. And it's not like I was skimping on quality either. Plus, the TFS-1 is great for boost. Heck, the stock cam is great for boost also.

your supercharged...he is not,.....a supercharger makes any combo in the end look good, pull the belt and even the playing field and compare N/A to N/A......I'd rather spend a little more in the begining then reconfigure the combo 2-3 times over trying to finally be happy with the N/A output.....I have 3 ots cams on the bench...one e-cam = 169.00 one comp thumpr , 269.00 and one 282hr 249.00..............the price of the 3 dissapointing cams far exceed that of one properly selected cam. BTSTDT WITH OTS......i'VE WASTED MORE money being cheap and "quote un quote" being on a budget to make performance than I have spending wisely...personally I don't select parts because the price sounds better, I'm after "works better for the money"..that's all I'm saying

I know what you are saying mjr. Heck, if I had the $$ I would have bought a custom cam, but at the time, funds were low and I was in a hurry to getting the car running properly again. I have only had this TFS-Cam. My cousin has gone through several. His favorite was a custom one made by Lunati. So, yes, custom is the way to go. But, some of the OTS cams can be pretty good. I've seen my combo N/A make more trq than a custom cam's. A guy I met a while back made 295rwhp and 305rwtrq with AFR's, Holley Systemax, and a custom cam(I beleive it was Ed's, but not sure). Still, I think I did pretty good with a box stock GT-40 intake, Trickflow heads, TFS-1 cam: 271rwhp/311rwtrq. Not earth shattering, but plenty. And through an auto. But I will say that not all dynos are the same. All I am saying is a custom cam is the way to go, but IF there is a tight budget, there are some pretty good OTS cams out there.
