The other day I.... BLEW IT UP!
Hey all,
Been a long time since Ive been on here, but after this I must share my story... I was driving home the other day, and a light turned red in front of me. I put it into neutral, and was coasting to a stop when I hear a loud clank, and the engine dies. I crank the car into a housing track, and pop the hood.. The belt was laying across the manifold, and I thought, THANK GOD! I just threw a belt.. Well after trying to re-rout the belt, I noticed the crank pulley seemed to me tilted a little bit. The car was still in neutral, so I pushed it back a few feet and on the ground was a puddle of oil. Oh great..
Today I pulled the engine out, and pulled it all apart. My front two cylinders are cracked, the front rods are in an 'S' shape, and the crank was snapped in half. Now I was worried about my brand new set of AFR's and my E303 I JUST put in. I pulled the heads off, no damage there ([8D] Pulled the cam out, no damage there I was very excited.. So now I am looking at putting in a brand new short block. Where should I get it from? I am here in southern California so I have a lot of engine building shops around here, but was wondering what I should get. Another 302? 306? 331? I have about 1500 to spend....

i would stay with something smaller than a 331 since you have 165's. they would still work on a 331 but 185's would probably work better along with a different cam.
my vote? 308.

hey man, you couldnt of been pushing that large amount of power with that setup. so how you think it went? ive never heard of cranks cracking but ive heard of blocks spliting. i have heard of a crank walking and that could of been what happend. look at it this way you got a converstation piece
id go with a 306 or a 331 but its up to you.

Obsolete: You are 100% correct. I am really not exactly sure how it happend as I was at idle, but the car had not been running right for a while, and I guess I took too long to fix it so now I get a new engine, oh darn.. Poor engine was just a baby 122,000 on it.
stanglx2002: How much did your 331 shortblock cost, and from where?
I was also thinking about a 331, and I know the 165's would be adequate enough with that set-up. Looking for a good price on one, would like all forged internals (crank can be cast) and something over 8.5 compression. Been looking at places such as hawaiiracing.com dndmotorsports.com
Anyone have any other good places that have good prices on shortblocks.
