Unhappy O/D not working after shifter kit install. need ASAP

I am about to buy a 89 mustang convertible. This is my first mustang and know very little about them. Everything works well on the car. The owner says that on a recommendation from a friend he replaced the tranny when it would not go into overdrive. The car continued to not go into O/D so he is selling it to me. He now thinks that all it needs is to have the shifter cable adjusted and that there was never a tranny problem. He has a B&M SLAP SHIFTER and kit installed. I need to know if this sounds likely and if it is how do I adjust the cable and if I can do this myself without braking something. He still has the old tranny and its part of the deal. I plan on getting this car within the week and I would appreciate help

A misadjusted cable could be part of the problem yes. Then another question, are you sure it is an AOD that is in the car. Ford makes a 3 speed auto that bolts right up that doesn't have an OD, its a c4. No, its not stock for the car but I wouldn't be surprised either. Losing OD is also a common trouble with AOD's. They are crap trannys from the factory.

It's either a misadjusted cable, OR the wrong shifter (sometimes you can change the gates, or times the whole unit must be changed).

How much is he asking for the car? 10 bucks says he is full of crap and the OD band failed.

misadjusted TV cable on an AOD can grenade the entire tranny after a little while. In my first mustangs case, about 500 miles. KABOOM. 1-2 were the only gears left.

May just walk because there's plenty of mustangs out there. Only problem is I only got about 2.5k and need a daily driver soon. I dont care to have the fastest stang, just something fun to drive to school and work.
This one doesn't have a ton of mods but isn't leaking oil and comes with a extra tranny, which he first assumed was blown but now thinks it was the TV cable. He says that when he put the new tranny in and realized there wasn't O/D, he drove it home and parked it. Also says he knows it is AOD and swears the tranny isn't bad. How do I go about adjusting the TV cable on an 88, or do you guy all agree I should dump this guy and find a better one?
Thanks for all your help guys!

Thanks guys, think im going to pass on that one.
But I just found a 1990 LX 5.0 Mustang, 5 speed, msd ign, dynomax exhaust. New motor, water pump, plugs, plug wires, radiator, clutch, clutch fan, solenoid switch, and battery. Needs some paint and other little things. Says it runs great. Only 2.5k.
