Another timing question
Sorry for the stupid question but I've had no luck searching.
My question is, Where is a good point to start at when adjusting the timing on a 306" with a very mild crower cam and a stock ignition?
It has signifigant powerloss, surges when decelerating and attempts to die while stopped.
I've got all new plugs,wires,cap and rotor to put on tomorrow, I just need to know a rough idea of what it should be set at.

If the car runs, the timing is "in range" enough to keep advancing until detonation. If you can't adjust your timing to the point of making the car idle properly, you have other problems to worry about.

Here's the story, The car was running fine, a little crappy but fine for a leaking holley carb and motorcraft wires that actually say 1985 on them!
I heard a slight ticking from one of the roller rockers and figured I'd get them adjusted since it supposedly has 3,000 miles on this rebuilt motor. So I told this mechanic to check and adjust the rockers and replace the plugs, wires and distributor since a buddy gave me an accel to put in. Well turns out the accel is evidently for a 351 and didn't fit so he just put the old back on and adjusted the rockers. And this is what I have now, I didn't get to talk to him as I picked the car up after closing time
It was not running like this when I took the car to him.

I heard a slightly louder one and I just wanted to make sure they are right, incase he didn't adjust them right. There are adjustments for these right?? or is it just torque them down and that's it? Do you know what the correct gap should be?
