Sorry for the stupid question but I've had no luck searching.
My question is, Where is a good point to start at when adjusting the timing on a 306" with a very mild crower cam and a stock ignition?

It has signifigant powerloss, surges when decelerating and attempts to die while stopped.

I've got all new plugs,wires,cap and rotor to put on tomorrow, I just need to know a rough idea of what it should be set at.

If the car runs, the timing is "in range" enough to keep advancing until detonation. If you can't adjust your timing to the point of making the car idle properly, you have other problems to worry about.

Here's the story, The car was running fine, a little crappy but fine for a leaking holley carb and motorcraft wires that actually say 1985 on them!
I heard a slight ticking from one of the roller rockers and figured I'd get them adjusted since it supposedly has 3,000 miles on this rebuilt motor. So I told this mechanic to check and adjust the rockers and replace the plugs, wires and distributor since a buddy gave me an accel to put in. Well turns out the accel is evidently for a 351 and didn't fit so he just put the old back on and adjusted the rockers. And this is what I have now, I didn't get to talk to him as I picked the car up after closing time
It was not running like this when I took the car to him.

stud mount rockers or roller rockers??

I was told they were roller and look to be rollers to me.
A shaft going through the pivot point with a retention ring on the ends, and roller tips.??

what heads are on the car??

I believe they are stock 1985 heads, Here's a crappy picture I took the other day.

those are pedastal mount rockers, as long as the mech knew how to set them up they are a set one time and leave deal

I heard a slightly louder one and I just wanted to make sure they are right, incase he didn't adjust them right. There are adjustments for these right?? or is it just torque them down and that's it? Do you know what the correct gap should be?

In other words is this something he could check for clearences, adjust a ticking one and charge me for??
Also any idea on a good timing starting point?
