Default help me open up my transmission

so i pulled the trans to put in a new clutch and i noticed my speedo gear was chewed up. this is the third one that has messed up. so my only guess would be that it is the drive gear. even though i don't think the orginal speedo gear was bad when i had the 2.73's in. ever since i put the 3.55's in the speedo gear is getting trashed.

i need to know how to access the drive gear, or really need to know how hard is this going to be? i have access to alldata, so i know if i run into trouble i can look at the diagrams and what not, but i would really like to hear it from a person. i know fivepointohh has torn apart one, so hopefully he'll chime in as well. thanks guys

take the 4 bolts off the shifter cover, remove it and inside you will see a block where the shifter ball goes into, on the top is a little hole in which a role pin is in, tap the roll pin all the way down and out and pull back on the block as if you were to shift a gear and it'll pull off the rail almost all the way, to get it the rest of the way off remove all the bolts holding the tailshaft on then pry the tailshaft housing off and the block will come off the rest off the way, then you will see the drive gear on the output shaft, tap it off, a clip holds it in place, reverse procedure to reassemble

thanks alot, i was hoping that i wouldn't have to disassemble the whole thing to access it. sounds like it shouldn't be that hard.

does this sound like the problem i'm having of chewed up gears?

another guy locally, wrote this

"It sounds like its the rear shaft bearing going out due to the symptoms you describe with the roar, vibration and the speedo gear getting chewed up all the time"

could it be a rear shaft bearing? the noise i am having did not exsist before i pulled the motor and did the hci and put the tranny back in, so i know his statement is not totally correct.

you'd have to have excessive play at the rear bushing/tailshaft area, some play is normal wear and won't cause that
