Default a few ?s about overheating problems

hey guys i need some input on 2 diff scenarios regarding cooling problems.

1. my cars temp goes all the way up to 1 line below the max on my gauge, before the temp starts to fall down. then it goes to normal operating temp. what could cause it to get so high before it comes down? it used to be fine

2. temp will rise slowly and start to overheat when the ac is on, unless im at freeway speeds...not sure whats up?

sounds like the thermostat might be slow to open and the over heating gone down the road for starters do you have the chin spoiler on the car? if you don't you should get one and put it on. what does the inside of the rad look like are the tubes getting stopped up.

Sounds like thermostat. Do yourself a favor and if it's usually hot where you live get a 180 t stat. Or is your fan possibly not cuttin on? When you turn your ac on your fan should kick on right away because thats extra load. And the car will not normally overheat when your on the freeway cause there is constant air hitting the radiator and block unless youre in traffic that's another story.

sounds like a t-stat for #1 and make sure the fins on the rad and the ac condensor are clean. mine got hot with the ac on. found the condensor to be pluged big time. if the condensor is pluged go to the hardware store and buy coil cleaner for house ac units spry it on let it sit hose it off works great.
