Default AOD Tranny: How Hard to Rebuild??

Hey All,

The AOD in my 86 needs rebuilt and I'm tired of waiting on the shop to do it. It's been there for over 2 months and they haven't worked on it yet. All the parts are sitting in the car waiting to be installed. What I want to know is how hard is a non-electronic AOD to rebuild? I'm considering just doing it myself if they don't get to it in the next week or so. I have above average mechanical ability and a healthy amount of patience. I can change heads, a cam, intake whatever. I've never rebuilt and engine, but I'm sure I could do it with a book and a few pointers. So how hard would it be and am I going to have to invest in a bunch of specialty tools to do the job right? I would be taking my sweet time doing the rebuild to make sure everything is done perfectly.

Honeslty i think that it is way out of your league, there is so much to a automatic transmission that it is like a maze, plus there is some special tools that you need in order to rebuid a tranny right,my opinion i would try to find another shop to rebuild because i think you will be getting in over your head if you try to do it yourself.

well you'l need to spend a few 100 on tools..doing a trans is complicated but could be done by a good back yard mechanic

Well, do you want it back together fast or do you want to learn how to rebuild it? I chose to rebuild mine (and am still trying to figure out the prob), with the help of a friend with a little knowledge. The actual rebuild of the inside parts were not hard. The only thing, I had to take 2 parts to a trans shop to use their "special tool" to seat some rings. I didn't need to buy any thing out of the ordinary. The valve body was taken apart and cleaned (ended up replacing it with a PA vb). I had to order a new tv cable, other one was broke. The hardest part was getting out of the car, had to take off headers and exhaust. And ALL the trans fluid everywhere. I have been working on mine for awhile. I keep replacing things to find the problem. Trans shops keep giving me suggestions, but nobody can pin point it. I have a governor coming, hopefully that'll cure the problem, if not the only thing left is converter or off to a shop. Everyone I talk to says I stupid for diving into this, but I won't learn if I don't. Some have had good luck with rebuild, I have not. If it will go wrong, I think it has for me. All this from a shift kit gone wrong. Good Luck!
