Flaming River Steering Shaft Problem
 

I intstalled a FR1504 Steering shaft when I converted to manual steering. I noticed that the steering wheel had a lot of play in it and I noticed that where the shaft meets the rack, it wiggles around. There is no way to tighten the coupler that connects the two, just a stud with a nut. Is the splined part of the rack supposed to be "dimpled" with a drill bit before installation? The end of the shaft just seems bigger than the splined part on the rack. Anyone else ever have problems with it? Thanks

im having the same exact issue with my car, sadly I have yet to find a "good" fix for it. The slop in the steering wheel is annoying as hell. Ive been thinking about putting something in there two tighten up against. The splined end of the rack (on mine) has a flat spot. im thinking I can get something in there that is dimpled to act as some sort of "lock"

It almost seems like the splines are different shaped or something...just terrible fitment. Adder if you figure anything out let me know. I moved the shaft as far down on the rack as I could and it seemed to help slightly. Did you dimple the spline part of your rack?

no, the spline part of the shaft is D shaped. and the set screw lines up with the flat side. I just think it needs a little something extra in there

should have bought the MM shaft.. mine works just fine

my rack has a flat spot for the stud to rest on making it tight. On mine if not paying attention I could let the shaft go too far down on the rack shaft going past the flat.

Have you guys contacted the manny about the issue.

i have the same issue. its minor tho, not enough to notice unless im paying attention. the car rarely is driven and there isnt a lot of steering needed in the 1/4 mile so i dont bother to do anything about it

I adjusted it so the shaft slides almost to the bottom of the splined part, dimpled it, and tightened everything back up. I cant feel any play now. The car had a ton of play before doing this; probably 3/4" or more.
