distributor question before I start car

distributor question before I start car
Ok so I have followed this article
https://mustangforums.com/forum/5-0-...stributor.html
Stuck my finger in #1 hole till air came out (balancer was resting before 0 degrees) but I turned it twice more after that like it said to until i got to 0.
Now I set my distributor pointing exactly at the #1 position on the cap perfect aligned with the previous marks already there.
Reinstall everything and now my question is do I start the car????
Or do I need to turn the cap now to the right a little so my timing is at 10 degrees before I try and start the car??
My block did not have these marks for 0 degrees and 10 degrees btw that he spoke of thats why I am not sure where to go from here
Any help?

Having it dead on is not neccessary for start up but I must admit I do what you mentioned.
Instead of lining it up with zero. I set the crank a few degrees before then try to line up the dist to zero. This will most likely give you a few deg of advance but for simplicity. Aim everything for zero and set it all after.

IMO i would get timing mark on my balancer its critical for timing and first engine start up
for efi put at 0 degrees the comptuer will adjust it right after you start it up, for carb put at 10 degrees btdc
put finger in hole rotate engine till air comes outta number one plug hole, you are now on compression stroke and can get the timing accordingly BTDC or at 0.
make sure you stab your distributer right having it exactly at number 1 were your timing pointer is set at EG. 0 or 10 degrees.
if ur spending money on a new engine then i would spend the extra and get a balancer worthy of marks haha, but if you do get one make sure its EXACTLY the right weight as your original. if its a new motor build oil pressure first, before you start
my friend moved his dizzy by hand upon first starting up at 0 and had a valve meet mr piston, pretty cool trophy tho valve is bent like at a 45* angle hahaha
