it was set at 12deg. but i put it at 11deg when i got the car back home to try to keep from from detonating.

i checked the codes on the car and code 96 poped up. do you think this could be causing the problem with the car being lean.

I was referring to under cruise conditions. If your final gear is at redline while cruising, then i don't suspect the engine would last long anyway. At near redline, low load is a condition where fuel economy isn't a main priority, all the same there still isn't enough air/fuel to cause temperatures to skyrocket. Running lean there isn't a big issue, the only case where it would be is if you have a very inefficient engine & it requires having the petal down quite a bit to maintain the rpm in which case it isn't a low load situation. I've usually pull around 18-20in. hg at high rpm, low load to maintain & i'm around 17-18 at idle.
