Default Cooling system problem.

1994 GT Mustang 5.0
Recently did a coolant flush due to a slight overheating problem. it was still drivable but it was just getting to hot for spirited driving. After that the problem went away for about a day. Then came back and was even worse. to the point of when I was getting on the highway it was at the L in normal on the gauge so i let off the gas and it cooled down fairly quickly. after that i noticed it had a 18 PSI cap from the previous owner put a 16PSI cap on and it did not help. now i just changed the thermostat. let it warm up to check for leaks it was all fine went for a test drive the firs acceleration the temp gauge shot up to the red. instantly i shut it off waited about a min. and the temp gauge was normal so i coasted home and that's were im at right now.

well im not a very good mechanic and im usually on this site for advice myself but it could be a couple different things like a head gasket or water pump i recently had a similar problem on my mustang and the fans werent turning on and it ended up being a coolin fan temperature switch so it could be a number of things you can check your head gasket by smelling the exhaust and see if it smells like antifreeze or you could run a pressure test on your cooling system also and check to see if the water pump pulley wiggles or leaks then you need a new water pump and for the fan start it up and let it idle until it reaches op temp and see if your fans turn on.

if the needle is moving in sync with the engine RPM's, the first thing I would check is engine grounds.

when the needs shoots up like that, do the fans kick on?

well then perhaps you should find a way to get some ACTUAL temps from your car, not just the readings from the ever so inconsistent, stock guage

If the temperature is shooting up on the highway. The problem is not the fan.

If you recently did a flush. Maybe there is still air in the cooling system. There is a dozen ways to rid a system of air. My favourite is to fill the coolant resorvoir to MAX. Run the engine through a couple hot, then cold cycles. The recovery system will purge of any air.
