Def something in the carrier is bad, just replace it - it will about the same as a gear swap labor wise... you can buy a good used 8.8 stock carrier off eBay for about $25

Usuually people pay anywhere from $200-500 for a rear end rebuild with gears installed and all

dont replace the whole carrier, just get your gears installed and trac-loc rebuild at the same time, make sure you get the master install kit, and the trac loc rebuild kit.

I called a gear place close to my house called Oceanside driveline. They said if they rebuilt the rear end and but 3:73 gears in it, it would be about 850, thats including everything. Does that sound about right?

thats right on if they mean doing a master install. which is all the bearing all the way to the axle bearings and seals. i would find out how much labor is and how much they are charging you for parts.

Do you think this is a urgent problem or it can wait a while?

thats high, i had gears and all new bearings and seals put in for 150. and then gears being 150 and kit was 80 or 90[dont remeber]

findout exactly why its that high

My though was about $450 labor, then $180 gears, $90 install kit, $50 tracloc rebuild kit. i know the labor sounds high, but take into consideration the extra for the trac loc rebuild, and the extra for the master install.

it can wait until your ready, unless it sounds like the rearend is binding up. just be aware of it. if it gets worse get ready. also dont just blow it off like it doesnt need done.
