Default front main seal

i was going to change my front main seal and i have the haynes book and on there it says i can just take off the seal with a screw driver, well i look and their is no way u can take it off its pushed in from the inside, i guess when they rebuild my heads and added all gaskets they put in the other type of seal or the wrong way, but what i wanted to know is it hard to pull timing cover off cause the haynes manual makes it sound eazy.

It's not put it from the inside. You have to remove the balancer and then pop out the seal from the front, w/a screw driver or something similar.

Older cars had the seal pressed from the rear. Newer cars have it pressed from the front. I don't know when the change was made, but I'm thinking it was mid 70's?

It's pretty easy to find out. Look behind the balancer with a flashlight and a mirror.

R&R of the timing cover is not overly difficult. It's a pain in the neck, though. I hate doing it. I put a new cam in my car last month. I made a mistake installing the front cover; so now I have to do it again. Ah, well. The search for power.

Why r&r the timing cover? completely unnecessary for a front seal job.

the best way to remove a seal is to screw 2 small screws on either side of the seal and pull. should come right out.
