turbo 400 trans
#11
i know of a guy who is running a 350 turbo behind ford engine(cant remember what it was off hand) but he had a bell housing made that bolted to the pump assembly after the 350 turbos bell housing was cut off it, not sure if it would work w/400 though. personal i would due a c-4 or a manual but i believe if u build a chevy use chevy parts. build a ford use fords parts.

Turbo 350s and turbo 400s have the same tranny case but different internals(gear ratios) I think. I have a turbo 350 in my chevelle right now and a 4.11 rear gear and I'm in second gear before I get out of intersections unless I'm on the throttle. 3 gears just arent enough for street IMO.
Have you looked into 700R4 trannys?
They are 4 speeds and that is what I'm bolting up to the 502 in my chevelle.
Look into MegaMonster transmissions. They make turbo 400s rated over 1000 hp and their 700R4's are about 900 hp rating. You can shift them manually if you'd like. They also make ford and mopar trannies.

They also make quality bellhousings and other driveline parts.

Buddy of mine runs a glide in his 8.60 nitrous fed fox and drives around town quite often,he built the car pretty much for the true street classes. He runs a tranny cooler out of like a Ford diesel...its huge.

Honestly if its gonna be a real street car (like driving around town and highway on a regular basis) Id stay away from a power glide or a 3 speed, its just gonna be two much. If ur just gonna drive it around the town every so often and its gonna spend most of its life at the track thats fine. But a glide and a 3speed on highway is killer. I run a c4 on my ranger with a mild 347 and 4.88 gear and its horrible.

I really appreciate all the input guys..thank you very much..the 700r4 trans is one i never heard about but i will investigate it...i will change from a 4:10 gear to probably a 3:55 when the turbo is installed but i cant afford to keep building broken transmissions.i think that is why most of the racers around here are suggesting the 400's durability.the thought of a 4 speed is great for the street and what i would like to use but i keep getting different opinions.more research is needed and i appreciate all of your thoughts..thank you again.i will be using a manual valve body and i was told about getting a good trans cooler especially for when i am on the trans brake....

I don't think the C-4 is gone to hold up real well to a turbo 408 what size turbo you talking and what kind of HP numbers are you looking to make. C-4 are good but are limited to the torque they will take and that is what a 408 and turbo is gone to make lots of. running the c-4 on the street is not that bad with a turbo car cuz you don't need lots of gear with a turbo in fact they like very high gear like 3.27 and so on. I only run 3.31 gears and a 28in tall tire with our turbo car and a c-4 it is fine on the street and the highway if you are not looking to run 80 mph all the time. if you want that then look into a 4 speed auto no doubt. they have aods and 4r70w Ford trans that will take 1000hp also but get the $$$$ out. the t400 is a good trans also and is very strong but again it is still a 3 speed. As for a glide they don't make real good street trans if the converter is real lose due to all the heat build up.
