Default SPEEDO STAYS AT ZERO (89 coupe)

got a 1989 5.0 coupe 5-speed...but the speedo stays at zero. should i look into the cable being broken? or any other causes?? any advice is greatly appreciated...

look under the hood to see if the cable is melted.alot of people dont tie them out of the way and they lay on the header

Hi,

You could also pull the instrument cluster out and check the cable back there as well as at the back of the speedo gauge

Also check at the transmission and see if the cable is actually connected.

Every time a thread like this gets posted, the last thing mentioned is the plastic gear at the end of the cable, which happens to be the most wearable and likely suspect for an inop speedo.

1.) Underhood check for melted wires.
2.) Is it connected to the trans?
3.) If it is connected, take it off and check the plastic gear for wear.
4.) If everything's fine, then your speedo might not be connected to the back of your instrument cluster?

Mattdel is right, and even if the speedo gear is not fully worn out, it can make your needle bounce and jump around.
