Default Starter Noise

Before I put my car away for the season it almost sounded like the starter was spinning when I tried to start the car. In the past any time I had a starter go out, I would get the tell tale clicking noise and would first replace the solenoid then the starter if necessary. Now it sounds like a couple cats fighing in a sack. Kind of a screeching, grinding noise. Is this just another sign of a bad starter? It is the factory original.
In late summer 08 I upgraded the clutch to a 10.5 cobra clutch with new 10.5flywheel. Went all year without any problems.

Probably destroyed the gear on the starter cuz we have 11" flywheels IIRC

The flywheel for the 10.5" clutch is the same size as the flywheel for the stock 10" clutch. The only difference is the bolt pattern.
The starter will eventually start the car, but it sounds like its getting worse to the point where I don't think it will turn the engine over

Remove and replace the starter. See if cat fight stops.

Sounds like the bendix spring on the starter gear has broken. Pull the starter and make sure the gear will move in and out without binding.

i had one that was going through gears over a period of time pretty good to and i could never figure out what was wrong with it i had taken them apart and just wasnt seeing the problem, well my dads buddy has a starter and alt. shop and he figured it out, it need a shim cause when it would bolt up to the naked eye it looked level but it was tilted just enough for time to eat up the gears
