Default weirded out by timing

Ok my completely stock 89 gt convertible will start like it's out of time and run for about 4 seconds then die. When I set the timing to TDC the rotor is pointing at the 1 on the cap but the pictures of the firing order show it one space off from where the rotor is pointing right now. Is it possible to be one tooth off and have a non-HO cap? I'm getting a little frustrated since she is geeting fuel to the intake so much you can smell it at the throttle body.

cap has nothing to do with HO/Non-HO. Its all about where the wires are placed.

Well after looking at the diagram and what the car is at TDC,the picture in my manual is wrong because the rotor is pointing at the number 3 cylinder spot.Hopefully it is just a tooth off, otherwise my wife will never let me hear the end of it about bringing home a car that dosen't run.lol

On the top of the true Ford cap is a number "1" that is next to the number 1 post. The cap only goes on one way so it is foolproof. Is the distributor hold down bolt loose? Perhaps it has moved unbeknownst to you.

see the prob is that your issue is not a timing problem....now that you've messed with it you most likely do have a timing issue now and the original prob, start stall issues can be fuel related or ignition but first I'd look at the idle circuit / IAC AND throttle body for carbon build up, IF you give it gas will it stay running...meaning before you F'ED with the timing??

The timing was a tooth off,so after I replaced the tfi just because I had a new one,it fired right up but it will only idle for about 10 minutes if you leave it alone but when you give it throttle it dies. There isn't a schrader valve on the rail where I can see but I am thinking it's fuel pressure because I cleaned out the IAC and throttle body already and it will throttle up on starting fluid.

You should pull codes and see if you have a code listed for the throttle position sensor. You stated when you move the throttle, it dies.
