Here in Chicago our cars have to pass an emissions test every year. My mustang just won't pass. They say the hydrocarbons are too high and it's burning raw fuel.</P>

I put an MSD blaster coil on the car thinking the hotter spark would make the gas burn more completely but the car actually did worse. I do have an adjustable fuel</P>

pressure regularator on the car but I don't know where it's set. Can you give some suggeestions?</P>

And get a fuel pressure guage and set your pressure correctly. For stock injectors I think it's like 38psi static (no vacuum hooked up). For the 30lb FMS ones iirc it's 42 psi.

try 35 pounds set your timing at 0 or 1 degree put in some fresh 89 gas,put in a higher number pcv valve, also clean you throttle body and egr valve, drill a very small hole in the throttle plate, put in a 190 stat and if your not pulling codes you should be ok and after it passing set timing at 14 ,37-39 pounds on the fuel and put in a 180 stat
good luck

Been there on that one-w/n a 'stang, but the air pump was the culprit. Went from "hoo, boy, carb, cat and lots of money" to the cleanest the vehicle had been in years. And it was a carb shop that found the problem! I think he charged me 20$ for the system inspection. I spent around 50 dollars for the pump. This was 1/3 of what the "emissions professional" wanted to troubleshoot the problem.</P><edited><editID>johnc</editID><editDate>37947.4763657407</editDate></edited>

If you changed the Ignition, you should change the plugs and wires too for a complete burn. When you go, retard timing a ton, get a full gas tank.

I was reading in the new MuscleMustangs mag an article where they put a dry nitros kit on an 86 GT and they said that the dyno gave a reading that the car was running on the rich side which they liked. So when they yanked one of the spark plugs they said thatit looked likeit was on they lean side because of the camera flash. I didn't know that spark plugs control whether your car runs rich or</P>

lean. Anybody know the stock setting for the spark plug gap? I hear you can buy pregapped spark plugs. And what is the stock fuel pressure setting for my 88LX?</P>
