Default T5 low speed clunking

I have a 94 cobra with the T5. This is my first manual so I am not sure if this is normal. My problem: When in traffic, shifting between 1st, 2nd and 3rd, there is alot of clunking and loose feeling in the driveshaft. If I am ready to shift into the next highest gear, when I disengage the clutch and press on the pedal the whole driveline clunks. Also in first cruising, letting off the gas and pressing on the gas creates a really jerky ride.

I am wondering if there is a solution to my problem or if this is normal for our cars? Will a new trans mount help? Is there something wrong with my tranny or driveshaft. Info is much appreciated. Thank you.

check tranny mount, check u-joints and rear end back lash, I doubt it's a tranny issue

Your U-joints could be bad. Put your car on jack stands and take the driveshaft in your hand and shake it. If the U-joints move and make noise, there is your culprit. You will feel a little play when you try to rotate the shaft, that is the lash described above, but you will be able to tell if you have bad joints if the driveshaft moves up and down or side to side.

I just bought an FRPP aluminum shaft, If my problem is the above described, will the new shaft fix that problem? Or should I replace something else when installing the new shaft? Thanks!

If the diff backlash is bad then you'll probably need to rebuild the diff. Or the pinion could just be loose, that happens sometimes. Get under the car and grad the pinion yoke and see if it moves around or rotates excessively back and forth without any resistance(do it with the parking brake on). And rotating excessively is anything more than barely seeing/feeling it.

If your new shaft came with its yoke attached and a new U-joint at the rear, you are all set IF the problem is the U-joints. Do what 67Mustang302 suggested to eliminate that as a potential problem. Basically, shake everything down there to find something loose. Since your problem occurs in more than one gear, odds are it is the joints or the rear.
