89gt engine turns over but won't start.

89gt engine turns over but won't start.
It happens intermittently(twice in 4months). The last time it happened I checked the solenoid for spark and changed the fuel filter. I can also hear my fuel pump priming when i put the key in start. That and the starter sounds fine. Could it be that my pump is priming but not pumping correctly? I might try disconnecting negative fuel line at fuel filter and checking pressure, should be about 35lbs. Or if it is electrical maybe its the module mounted on the distributor not allowing fuel to get to the engine?

And what are you talking about when you state you tested the solenoid for spark? Did you mean the coil?
The TFI can be tested at most good autoparts stores, and i have been posting this alot recently but, theres PLENTY of threads around here on how to solve no starts if you were to do a search.
Simple steps to take is, when you have a no start, do you have no fuel or no spark? Then, you check each one of those out. Spark can be tested with a ST125 tester or a spark tester from places like Autozone. For fuel, well, buy some starting fluid, spary some into the intake, if the stang runs then dies, you have a fuel issue. But, you said you can hear the pump prime so i would rule that out of the mix.
Remember, the pump only runs for 2 seconds unless the ECU receives a tach ref signal.

I took a look the mass air flow sensor and it looks clean, i don't think theres a problem there. I was thinking thats its the ECU, because not much else fits. Yes I meant the coil. I'm getting both spark and it would seem fuel because the pump is priming. Its just not getting to the engine. But its working now and I dont have any lights on, I wonder if I could pull a code. As for a problem with the TPS, wouldn't I be experiencing problems after I started the car, ie hesitation or stalling?

You say it is working now. So is your problem intermittant? You should still pull codes to check for stored fault codes. Odds are if the TPS was bad it would idle flakey as well as be tough to start. Still, pull codes to be sure. It is easy. Consult your Haynes shop manual. You do have that manual, don't you?

TFI = Thick Film Ignition Module......
You might want to invest in a Haynes manual or browse the net for how the early OBD1 ignition system works and familiarise yourself with some of the basic terms and parts of your Stang.
