Default Used Cylinder Heads

I am going to look at some ported GT 40 (not P) heads tomorrow, and I am not sure how to tell if I am getting a good deal. I know they are correct because of the castings (3 vertical bars) however there is no paperwork on the port job, which makes me a little hesitant. Besides cracks in the head, the springs, pushrods, and broken head bolts is there really anything else that I should be looking for to make sure they are in good shape?

He is asking $300 for them, and claims that they were on his car. The price isn't bad at all, I just don't want to go through with the install and have any major issues. I also don't want to pay a machine shop to look at them because at that point I might as well start looking at new aluminum heads. But I will probably have to have a machine shop look at them before I install them.

get them pressure tested at the machine shop. If it checks out good, buy them. If they need a lot work, you are probably better off with an aluminum head

then you'll get what you pay for, .....not smart to pay a shop to look at them after you buy them but before makes more sense........reminds me of all the people who bring a car into me for a state inspection after they bought it, then when I hand them the sheet of the tons of stuff wrong with the car they then wish they had brought it to me for inspection before they purchased it.....see the point?? buyer beware...spend a little now to save more later

Agreed! Have them checked out first AND than make a decision. Its the only smart/safe way to go.
