Help with ticking only after car warms up.
 

My car has been ticking loudly from the passenger side. It only ticks after the car warms up. The ticking is not constant. (Something like.. Tick,tick,tick,silent,tick,silent,silent,tick,tick ) I figured if it was a lifter it would tick constantly once the ticking started. Once the car is warm and the ticking starts I can shut it off let it sit for 2 mins at most and then fire it up and the ticking it gone. Then after 2-3 mins of idling it comes back. I got my Stethoscope out and sounds like its coming from the #1 cylinder. I thought exhaust leak at first. Till I heard the sound coming from the intake above where the #1 cylinder lifters are with the stethoscope. So do I have a bad lifter? Sticky lifer? Pushrod issue on only 1 cylinder? Maybe just that 1 cylinder needs to have the RRs adjusted If I have to I will try and take a vid.

Car has Eddy RPM heads, Comp gold RRs, Weiand Stealth, Holley Street Avenger 670, Longtubes ya know the usual.

Lifters do not tick. You have a faulty OR improperly installed rocker arm.

Lifters do not tick yes.. but they can cause ticking. Guess I will just pull the VC and check her out after lunch. Just wanted an idea of what might be the problem(s).

sounds like rocker arm like tony said, though the starting after the car gets warm makes it seem as though its an oil feed issue maybe. My pos 94 tempo thats got 284k on it does the same thing, starts nice once the oil is warm the whole valve train starts to make noise, thats just cus its old and abused though. Even with 15-40 it does it.

As 5.0 kid alluded.... the warmer the oil... the more viscous it is. The higher the viscosity the weaker the oil is to SHEAR strength.

In essence, the warmer the oil the more likely it is to make noise.

Defiantly sounds like a lifter, little adjustment and it should be fine. Also check the injector, sometimes they can get noisy from wear.

Ok I checked the cylinder I thought was making the noise. was about a 1/2 turn off on the RRs. Took it for a drive did great.. Parked in drive and let it idle and it starts ticking. Mainly does it at idle and not at higher RPMs. Tried taking a vid of the sound but my cell has horrible quality and u can't even hear the tick over the sound of the air from the fan blowing over the mic.

Should I just go ahead and try to adjust the rockers while its running so I can find the problem easier?

I am guessing since it does it mostly at idle and almost not at all at higher RPMs it is an oiling issue? Oil is pumping up through all the pushrods up to the rocker arms. Maybe just not enough? When I had the intake off the lifters did look old and dirty. Maybe I just need to replace all the lifters?

Maybe I will run some Seafoam through the oil and then vac line and see what happens? Maybe put some Lucas Oil stabilizer in it?

Ok now this is weird. I decided to take the Thermostat out just temporary to make the car not get as hot. It gets up to about 160F now and NO ticking at all no matter how I run the car.. Yet when the thermostat is in it gets to 190F it starts to tick.... Went to Advance Auto today and gonna do the whole Seafoam and Lucas Stabilizer today.
