my 89 T5 transmission had gear oil or something because it wasnt the usual red color. and the transmission oil was too thick too. i drained it. and now i want to add atf mercon fluid...can i drain the gear oil and add the ATF FLUID???? any advice is greatly appreciated...

drain it, run it on stands for a minute, and drain it again, refill and repeat until it is all flushed out

That about sums it up, some people are jackasses, only sticks i know of gear oil being used were jeeps and other 4X4`s i have heard alot of this happening, makes for a sticky tranny!!

Royal Purple, Royal Purple synthetic manual transmission oil works great too.

Almost anything before the mid 70's for all the manufacturers was gear oil.

When I bought my 93, 4 years ago. I was doing the basic fluid changes. I also found gear oil in my T5. I was anxious to see the improvement as I was going to refill it with Mobil One sythetic ATF.
Let me tell you it fell pretty much the same. I think it's about 1/2 a decible quieter.
