Default what the hell is this?

Its this 2 inch long white peg that extends through the bottom of the steering wheel column cover. The previous owner has a bolt going through the cover to keep it pushed in. If i remove the bolt, i have to push it in to release the keys. I want to find out what this is, so i can replace it. Also, if anyone knows what this is, what purpose does it serve?

Why do you want to replace it? Sounds like it is working to me.

ok, it sounds like its not broken then, thanks guys. I never knew that it was there to release the key. I still want to rig it, so i don't have to push it in every time to remove the keys. I looked at it and figured out an easy way to do it.

lol.. i know, im just not used to having to push it in to release the keys. I rigged it up better than before w/o a bolt going through the cover.
