Default Bypassing starter to start?

Hi, first post. Just purchased a 89 GT as a project and a hobby. Having some trouble getting it started, turn the key and nothing, not click or anything, just the fuel pump hum. The guy I bought it from said he bypassed the starter to start it when I stalled out and was stranded for a second. He laid a screw driver over something on the drivers side. Since I'm new to these motors please forgive me if I'm lacking on some of the terminology. The starter is under on the passengers side, correct? He said the wire just needs to be tightened, but I took a look at it and it seems fine. I traced the wire up to a small device (please tell me the proper name) that contains 3 connections, 1 to the +battery, 1 to the starter, 1 into the cabin (guessing it's just a big switch for the starter). Did he just jump the two connections on this device?

Also as far as fixing it goes, would you recommend replacing the starter or this device that I still have not learned the name for (taking a guess and saying soleniod)?

Thanks for the help

Most of repairs come down to common sense. You are on your way to a great adventure.

I felt stupid after realizing what I was talking about, then felt like a genius fixing it by hitting it with a hammer

The hammer-part one. Next week the screwdriver-flat, then on to screwdriver-crosspoint.
