Default Transmission whine

the owner of the 87 GT I'm looking to buy says the transmission has a bearing whine. what causes this and is it expense/important to fix?

Throwout would be more of a squeaking noise I believe, last time I had a 5 speed whine it blew up,but could be something simple, someone else will chime in Iam sure.

if you just rest your foot on the clutch pedal and it goes away... it most likely the stock aluminum bearing retainer. you will need to remove th etrans to replace it, but a good steel one is only $25 i think. but a shop will get you about $400 just to R & R it for that 2 minute job

he says it only whines under acceleration and it is one of the bearings that hold the input/output or lower main shaft. Im going to look at it this weekend
