Head porting question

Head porting question
For anyone who has ever looked in there, in the exhaust ports are little bosses at the tops of the ports that look like they do nothing they have a small hole in the that bottoms out after a 1/4" or so,,the question is can they be removed without any adverse affects. they look pretty useless and a restriction on the exhaust system.
