Default Newbie Got a smokin deal but could use a little help.

Hey folks thanks for a great forum a lot of info on here!!!!!!!

Here's the deal:
1991 5.0 gt vert t5 swap looks like the rst is stock. Pioneer head kicker 1000 watt amp with 2 12in in the trunk for......wait for it.......500.00 bucks!!!
The po could not get it to pass smog and got rid of it. Coulple of hours reading here and egr switch dirt and a couple of feet of vacuum lines!!!!!
PASS The car is a 18th birthday present for my little brother. It's time to teach him a few things about wrenching and getting in to a little trouble

Here's the question:

The transmission shifts up through the gears with out problem. Once you get over 2nd gear you must return to second gear position to get it to shift.
Sorry if that is confusing
If I am down shifting from 4th to third you have to pull the gear shifter to 2nd gear position then to the gear you were going for. Same 5th to 4h from 5th to 2nd position and then down to 4th.
If you try to shift normally there is no grinding just feel a slight pulsing like you would feel if the gear was in position and locked.....

Any ideas??? I think it is the stock shifter with a ****....doesn't feel like a short shift.

Thanks in advance
Jay Knight Yosemite National Park California.

i cant really help too much, the only thing i have to say though is get rid of the stock shifter!!! they are complete sh*t, they aren't accurate and precise.. could maybe cause damage to the tranny with rough shifts

i would guess that its not the shifter itself but that its in the top case of the trans, that is what controls shifts.

Your description of the problem just made me dizzy trying to figure out what is actually happening, yes it was confusing.

Can you slip it in and out of all the different gears with the car running, clutch pedal down and car not moving? How about with the engine off?

If your shifter is broken or complelely worn, which is rare. The stock shifters are not as bad as described.

i agree, the stock shifter is made by hurst.

the crappy feel of it is ONLY due to the rubber bushings in it... take the handle off, remove the rubber crap, and use some nuts or washers to take the space of the rubber. it will feel solid and 500% better

but it's most likely in the trans not the shifter, my guess is synchros, they are the first to go in every t5

Thanks for the ideas.

I just checked it out the gears will switch in and out with motor running and not moving.
I tried starting out in 4th and shifting to 3rd it worked going slow.<25 or so. not sure what's up. I need to check the fluid in the thing .....haven't yet. It might just be that if not rebuild is coming I guess.
